Communication 201 (Communication & Social Issues) is completely focused on civic engagement and community activism (previously the course focused entirely on the rhetoric of social movements). The purpose of the course is to have students achieve a broader understanding of civic engagement and community activism, share perspectives and experiences, investigate an issue or problem at Illinois State University or in the surrounding community, and plan and begin to implement a campaign to address the issue or problem identified. Students choose which projects they will study, and they design their own campaigns. In this way, students learn basic skills of civic engagement and community activism, while also empowering themselves to be change agents in our community.
